And a very good read indeed.In the lush and magical tradition of Naomi Novik’s award-winning Uprooted comes this riveting debut from brilliant young writer Callie Bates-whose boundless imagination places her among the finest authors of fantasy fiction, including Sarah J. So tantalisingly close to brilliance, it's a very good entry in a really good series. It does of course pull things together superbly in the final quarter, resolving it all very nicely and leaving you desperate for book three. As after a great first half it does start to feel as if it's meandering in the third quarter, and you do wonder where it's going for a while. So it really does carry you along so very well, but it's just not quite five stars. It also does a great job of keeping you on tenterhooks at times. And it does make the central romance one that has to get through such things as well. It does deal with the consequences of revolution and what happens after, rather than just making things a happily ever after. The nineteen century style setting is one again great.

And then it's back to the present for the main narrative.Īlthough things were won in Eren, Elanna's new role is a great strain on her. You get an interesting look at his past in the prologue. As it's all told in first person present tense not by Elanna, like book one. It is quite an involved narrative at times, and does have some mild violence and one mild adult moment. Recommended reading age would be fourteen and up. It does finish on something of a cliffhanger to set up the third and final book. There are a couple of maps of the setting at the front.Īnd being the middle of a series, it doesn't end the story. This began with book one 'The Waking Land.' This is not an ideal jumping on point if you've not read that, so start with that one to get the most from this series. A trilogy of fantasy novels for young adult readers.
